Kimi began playing classical piano in Korea at the age of seven. Her first lessons were with a music professor from Seoul University. Upon graduating from high school she began playing numerous venues with a semi-classical/pop combo. Around this time a friend took her to a Jazz and blues club near a U.S. army base. She fell in love with Jazz and soon began her quest to emigrate to the United States in order to study jazz piano and theory. Upon her arrival in the United States, Kimi enrolled at Los Angeles City college and studied music theory and English as a second language. Her first private jazz piano lessons were there with music professor Laslo Czer.

Her next move was to the Musician's Institute in Hollywood, from which she graduated with a foundation in modern jazz. Kimi had a degree in Jazz studies at California State University Northridge and studyed Jazz Piano with Gary Fukushima and Matt Harris, former Keyboardist with Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Currently she is working towards her master's degree. In 2002 Kimi released her debut solo CD entitled, "The Kyung Kim Trio" which features Jazz standards and original pieces. In 2005, Kimi released a second CD, this time with a vocalist and a jazz quartet. In 2008 she will release her third CD which features some original,modern smooth jazz. |

Her Jazz Ensemble for the past six years has performed at numerous private, countless weddings and public functions at venues such as The Grove in L.A., the Long Beach summer festival and the Shore Line Village, events in Westlake ( Thousand Oaks) and the Fisherman's Village and Yacht club in Marina del Rey. Also she has performed a lot of Korean events such as the 2006 Korean Film Festival, a music director of Korean town plaza summer and winter music festival, the Center Bank and Woori Bank events. Kimi Music Ensemble is well known among the Korean community. |
